There is frequently a price to pay when one is the first on the block to own something brand new. Often, there are small glitches in the first prototypes that hit the market and the new 3-D TV’s are no exception.
Consumers who have bought the new 3-D TV are usually inclined to make comparisons to their experiences in the theater and the picture quality of their previous high definition sets, all of which is practically guaranteed to deliver a level of disappointment until the various ‘bugs’ are worked out.
Most reviews are based on the back lit LED based LCDS with 3-D capabilities that first hit the market. It goes without saying that opinions vary and brings to mind the old adage that “one man’s treasure is another man’s trash”
The main complaint appears to be picture performance in a darkened room; namely LED backlighting that creates clouds on the screen. It seems the LEDs give off white light that is visible on the screen during dark scenes. One 3-D TV review states, “I was watching a space movie and my friend could not understand why there were white clouds on the screen. I had to play along since I could not bring myself to say that there were not clouds but the backlighting in the television.” Another reports light shining in from the edges and feels this will create potential problems with 3-D viewing; especially once we have sufficient 3-D content available.
On the pro side, others do not see the cloudy lighting as an issue and feel the technology has greatly improved over the late 2009 models. One 3-D TV review on the Samsung states the color accuracy is fantastic and the black level as outstanding. In-store demos are even prompting many to give 3-D TV reviews. Out of these in-store reviews, most report being extremely impressed with the new technology and are ready to purchase.
